Scottish Folklore: Grey Mare of Ballachulish

The Grey Mare of Ballachulish is a haunting tale of a supernatural horse found on the moors near the village of Ballachulish, Scotland. The mare is seen on misty nights where she blends into the mist like a liminal being.

If unfortunate enough to be caught on the moors during a misty night, the ghostly mare has fiery eyes and her mane and tail whip furiously in the spectral wind. She might be a warning or she might be seeking revenge on those who harm their horses.

Local folklore claims she was once a beloved horse, loyal and gentle and owned by a kind-hearted farmer. In hard times, the farmer was forced to sell her to a cruel man. Unable to be mistreated by her new master, the mare became a vengeful ghost that roams the moors to punish those who mistreat their horses.

The Grey Mare of Ballachulish is a tale of warning and vengeance from a spectral horse who will drag the guilty into the mists with her.
