Norse Myth: Rán

Image compiled of Rán from Pinterest

In Norse mythology, Rán (Old Norse: [ˈrɒːn]) is a goddess and a personification of the sea. Rán and her husband Ægir who also personifies the sea, have nine daughters, personifications of waves.

Rán apprars in the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, compiled during the 13th century from earlier traditional sources.

Rán is associated with a fishing net which she uses to capture those who have drowned at sea. She is the goddess who, not dissimilar to Freya and Odin, collects the souls of the deceased. Prayers to Rán are offered for those who drowned at sea. According to Völsunga saga, Rán once loaned her net to the Norse Trickster, Loki.
