Description
Charlie died in Nevada, 1973, after seeing Led Zeppelin live on stage and making the wrong choice on the long drive home.
Corey meets him at a TAD gig seventeen years later and feels an immediate attraction. They both swear their night together will be a onetime thing, but neither can stay away.
Corey and Charlie spend two decades building a life together, a mortal and vampire in love, but there are some things Corey’s not willing to give up. She can move cities when Charlie’s eternal youth raises suspicion and she can rebuild her career as a music journalist after every disruption to their life, but as she gets older, it’s harder and harder to be satisfied with their nocturnal existence.
Then a moment of weakness delivers Charlie and Corey the one thing they never expected to have…and their relationship gets more complicated than either of them ever dreamed.
Summary
This is a long-overdue review of horror novella Cruel Nights by Australian author Jason Nahrung.
Review
Cruel Nights is a dark, bittersweet vampire horror nestled in grunge-soaked 1990s Seattle. Nahrung takes a fresh approach to vampire and especially exploring immortality and the realities of maintaining a long-term relationship with a mortal. There is deeply emotionally grounded storytelling in a tale about love, sacrifice, and the realities and burdens of living forever.
Nahrung explores what happens when the ‘romance’ of eternal life collides with the realities of commitment, change and a desire for something more. Nahrung delivers a compelling and refreshingly grounded take on vampire fiction. Cruel Nights moves beyond the familiar glamour of immortality to examine the everyday complications of mortal-immortal lovers, creating a story that is as much more about relationships and growing older than it is about blood and the supernatural.
The relationship between protagonists Corey and Charlie is intimate, shaped by attraction, affection but also affected by anger, frustration and the struggles to keep rebuilding their lives together in new cities as time passes and Charlie doesn’t age. Corey is an engaging, independent and determined character who refuses Charlie’s immortality to dictate her existence, ambitions and desires. Ultimately, a sudden change of events forces Charlie and Corey to face the reality of the vampire-mortal dynamic.
Nahrung excels at creating a gritty reality to vampirism, where luxury or endless adventure are absent. Immortality brings practical difficulties, secrecy, and the constant need to adapt. This make the supernatural feel grounded and the story authenticity.
Conclusion
Cruel Nights is a dark, intimate, and unexpectedly tender take on vampire fiction. The combination of horror with a believable relationship, a visceral grunge-era setting is balanced with thoughtful reflections on love, ageing and the compromises of sharing a life with someone so fundamentally different from yourself. A highly recommended read for those who enjoy character-driven horror, unconventional vampire stories and a bittersweet explorations of love and mortality. A highly rewarding read.
