Summary

I recently read the first issue of First Nations comics series Cleverman written by Wolfgang Bylsma.

Review

First introduced to Cleverman from the ABC TV series, this First Nations near-future supernatural and dystopian adventure is full of folklore, legends and sociopolitical issues. Perhaps this is needed now more than ever.

Cleverman #1 follows the tale of Yulu and her fight (literally) to survive in a society where hairy people like herself are caged in containment areas. From a cage fighter in The Pit using her extraordinary skills and supernatural abilities to defeat opponents, Yulu is the epitome of a marginalised single woman willing to do anything to give her child a better life.

Cleverman has so much heart and soul to give in a comics series that is brutally honest of the consequences of not obeying lore or becoming insensible to the people and lives around you.

Conclusion

Cleverman is a highly recommended comics series for fans of First Nations Indigiverse comics, the TV series and anyone seeking depth to a bear-future vision that is dark, soulful and beautiful while being on the mark with current sociopolitical issues.
